“RAI” Precision Vernier Potentiometer Model No. 55X-VP is designed for the measurement of voltage and current with a high order of accuracy. This precision potentiometer can be used as a laboratory standard for routine or accurate measurement of potential, resistance, or current; as a standard for calibrating potentiometers; for standardizing electrical currents for electrical measuring instruments; and with thermocouples and other precision measurement applications.
The 55X-VP is a high precision potentiometer designed to provide excellent measurement resolution and stable performance. It can also be used as a vernier potentiometer where fine adjustment and accurate measurement of voltage are required.
Excellent performance is achieved by the use of switches throughout the measuring circuit. A main switch divides the overall potential down to 0.1 V steps, and the two successive 100-way switches divide down to 0.001 V and 0.00001 V. A range switch multiplies the range by 1, 0.1, and 0.01 when required to achieve better measurement resolution.
These 100-way switches were specially designed for the potentiometer so that thermal e.m.f. generated at the contacts is minimized with low contact resistance. Moreover, the circuit is designed to eliminate current flow through the 100-way switch contacts at balance, thus removing any error that might arise through changes in contact resistance.

The 55X-VP provides ±0.005% accuracy from 100 mV to 1.9 V, ±0.01% from 1 mV to 99 mV, and ±0.05% for measurements up to 0.9 mV.
The 55X-VP uses high-quality aged manganin standards, specially designed 100-way switches, low contact resistance, and fine stepwise adjustment. These features provide high resolution and stable measurement performance.
The 55X-VP can be used with a Spot Reflecting Galvanometer, Analogue Galvanometer, 2 Volt Accumulator, Electronic Standard Cell, and Volt Ratio Box to form a complete precision measurement system.
